Some channels in Shiptheory support automatic merging of shipments. This works as follows:
- An initial shipment with a unique merge identifier is dispatched from the channel.
- This shipment is cloned to a new merge shipment, which is then used as the basis for everything except products, parcels, weights and values. It will be given the merge identifier as a Shipment ID and will have a automatically generated Order ID.
- The new merge shipment is given a status of "Merging" and waits for more shipments to come on from the channel.
- When a shipment with a matching merge identifier comes in from the channel its products are added to the merge shipment. In addition the weight, value and number of parcels of the new shipment is added to the merge shipment.
- This process repeats until a shipment with a release flag is dispatched from the channel. This marks it as the last shipment in the merge group. At this point the merge shipment has its status set to "Releasing" and runs through the shipping rules like a normal shipment.
