If you are receiving the error "Unknown SSL protocol error in connection to connect20.magentocommerce.com:443" you should update your cURL to support TLSv1.1 as this will resolve the issue you are experiencing

The cause of this is that Magento have depreciated old protocols which would include the protocol you would have used to get this error.
